BANKING - Bank Asya : Mobile phones to be used on bridges, toll roads

A special agreement between Bank Asya and Turkcell makes it possible for motorists to pay tolls on bridge and toll roads via their mobile phones, eliminating the need to carry special cards.

The new system will install the features of the Card Pass System on mobile phones, spreading the utilization of contactless mobile passage solutions based on Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. However, the system will not require the possession of an NFC-compatible mobile phone.

The joint Bank Asya-Turkcell project also marks the opening of contactless mobile applications for everyone in Turkey, previously only used locally for some test applications. The plan is to launch the system by February 2011, and any interested individual can start benefiting from the system just by getting a specially designed SIM card from Turkcell Communication Centers (TİM). Customers can charge these cards with credits or, if they want, they can immediately start using them just by registering their credit card information to AsyaCard DIT, a prepaid multi-application chip and PIN card combining the power of MasterCard EMV OneSmart features with an integrated municipal toll and transit application.

Bank Asya Assistant General Manager for Individual Banking Hasan Ünal said the bank is always looking for ways to “make the lives of customers more comfortable,” and this latest application is in line with that principle. In a statement to unveil the new application, Ünal argued that the merging of mobile phones with payment systems is opening many doors to very different opportunities for end users. “We already have a significant customer base in the market with 800,000 on-account and 400,000 cash KGS card holders,” he said.

According to Turkcell Assistant General Manager for Product and Service Management Cenk Bayrakdar in the same press release, Turkcell has been the pioneer of NFC applications worldwide since 2005. With this new system, customers can pay tolls just by displaying their phones to card-detecting machines, he added.
