WORLD - Islamic banking assets could reach $1.8 trillion by end of 2016

JEDDAH: Islamic banks may be bolstered by a nearly doubling of assets within five years, as borrowers seek alternative methods of financing due to a cutback in lending at European and US banks, according to a report by Deutsche Bank.

The bank expects that mortgage financing, particularly in Saudi Arabia, could provide $100 billion in assets to the overall industry. (source)

Turkey's constitutional referendum last month gave a boost to prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling AK Party, as voters approved 26 amendments to the country's 1982 Constitution. The poll was an important test for the government ahead of next year's general election.

FINANCE - GENERAL - Islamic financial institutions to restructure debts

Mideast finance leaders anticipate reforms in the post global financial crisis climate with 66% believing the industry is under-regulated.

Dubai: Over half of the Middle East's Islamic finance institutions (IFIs) flagged a need for raising capital and are likely to restructure current Islamic debt over the next 12 months, according to Deloitte's Islamic Finance leaders survey in the Middle East, the results of which were released yesterday.

Aug 31, 2010: The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision has issued the final version of its paper entitled Microfinance activities and the Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision that contains supervisory guidance for the application of the Basel Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision (BCP) to microfinance activities, and the range of practices on regulating and supervising microfinance activities.
