KUALA LUMPUR: Dallah Albaraka Group chairman and founder Shaikh Saleh Abdullah Kamel has been awarded the 2010 Royal Award for Islamic Finance.

Shaikh Saleh was awarded the accolade for his visionary drive, extraordinary leadership and personal commitment in spurring global accessibility of Islamic finance.

His work, which covered over four decades, has helped fast-track the global adoption of Islamic finance and continued to have a sustained impact on the world financially, economically and socially.

As part of efforts to develop future talent, Shaikh Saleh established the Islamic Economics Research Centre at King Abdul Aziz University and the Jeddah Centre for Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia.

He also founded the Saleh Kamel Centre for Islamic Economy at Cairo’s al-Azhar University and the Saleh Kamel Centre for Banking Studies and Research at the King Saud University in Saudi Arabia.

Shaikh Saleh’s son, Mohyedin Saleh Kamel, received the award on behalf of his father, who was unable to attend the event.

“It is a great honour for him to be so recognised, especially by a jury of cush prominence and standing,” Mohyedin said in his acceptance speech.

The Royal Award is spearheaded by the Malaysia International Islamic Financial Centre and supported by Bank Negara and the Securities Commission.

Nominations have come from every sector of the industry including syariah, academia, industry practitioners, Islamic finance institutions, research institutions, Government agencies and non-governmental organisations.
The seven-member jury comprises eminent individuals, syariah scholars, academicians and Islamic finance practitioners from Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the United States.
